September 11 (Saturday) – Lunch at Clyde’s-Tower Oaks Lodge – 11:30 a.m.

Join us for lunch and catching up on "how you spent your summer" at Clyde’s Tower Oak Lodge, a charming, rustic restaurant in Rockville, Maryland where we have had a number of very popular luncheons in the past. Lunch will begin at 12:00 noon. Early arrivals may enjoy a pre-lunch cocktail and also be early enough to get a parking place! Clyde’s has great food and a wide-ranging menu but prices will still be in the $10-$15 range.

Directions from I-495: Take Route I- 270 North to the Montrose Road East exit (Exit 4A). Keep left on the exit and follow the Tower Oaks ramp to the traffic light. Make a left onto Tower Oaks Boulevard. A short distance later, make a right onto Preserve Parkway and go almost to the end. The restaurant will be on your left. There is a parking lot next to the restaurant.

September 15 (Wednesday) – Hike the Billy Goat Trail – 10:30 a.m.

We will meet at the parking lot across the road from Anglers’ Inn on MacArthur Boulevard in Potomac, Maryland. This hike is difficult and requires good balance. It is a very popular trail with some of the best river views in the Washington area. Wear sturdy hiking or running shoes and don’t. forget water, sunscreen and a hat, of course. Optional "take-alongs" are insect repellent, camera and binoculars. After the hike, we will stop for lunch, so do bring money! Call Dietrich Roesler a day or two in advance at 703-768-2456 if you’d like to come. And, if the weather looks "iffy", call Dietrich on the scheduled day before 8:00 a.m.

If coming by the Beltway, get off at Exit 41 and go north/west on Clara Barton Parkway about a mile and a half to a T-intersection with MacArthur Boulevard. Go left (west) another mile and a half to the Anglers Inn restaurant. The Inn is on the right but parking for us in on the left.

September 16 (Thursday) -- IMAX in 3-D at the Museum of Natural History (NMNH) --7:00 p.m.

Join other CGS members for an evening featuring two IMAX films and an appearance by representatives of the Cirque du Soleil, who are in town for their show OVO.  The films are the live-action Bugs 3-D: Tropical Rainforest Adventure and Cirque du Soleil's Journey of Man.  Both films are about 40 minutes in length.  Cost is $12 per person. September 24 (Friday) – "The Tenth Man", Gunston Arts Center, Theater II – 8:00 p.m.

The Tenth Man is a unique romantic comedy written by the talented and daring Paddy Chayefsky. The old men belonging to a decaying orthodox New York City synagogue decide to hold a Jewish exorcism to banish demons that have possessed the granddaughter of one of the members. Jewish religious law requires a quorum of ten for it to work and they only have nine. So they recruit a young man passing by to complete the group. What follows is an unusual romance punctuated by wit and surprises.

October 13 (Wednesday) – With PVS: a Culinary Experience at Culinaire – 12:00 noon

The Potomac Valley Skiers are sponsoring a delightful lunch experience at Culinaire Restaurant, the restaurant at the Art Institute of Washington’s culinary school in Rosslyn, Virginia. The culinary students, supervised by a chef instructor, cook and serve and the guests dine and enjoy. The light and airy setting is on the 12th floor at 1820 North Fort Myer Drive, Arlington, Virginia, with large picture windows looking outward as well as large picture windows looking into the kitchen. If our party is large enough (25 – 35), then we can reserve the entire restaurant. Otherwise, we will reserve a set number of tables. Expect prices to be around $15.00 for three courses. A credit card is the only allowable form of payment. The building is across the street from the back exit of the Rosslyn metro. There is metered and garage parking available in Rosslyn also. October 21 (Thursday) – Hike to Mary’s Rock, Virginia – 11:00 a.m.

Mary’s Rock is a popular hike because of the magnificent views in all directions from the top. It is a 3514 foot peak that overlooks the Thornton Gap. The hike is moderately difficult with a round trip distance of about 4 miles. Remember to bring your Golden Age Passport for the entrance to Skyline Drive (or you can purchase one at the entrance). Remember to bring sturdy hiking or running shoes, water and lunch. We can stop on the way home for an early dinner.

Directions: I-66 W to Exit 10A, Gainsville to US 29 S. Continue for about 13 miles to US 211W at Warrenton. Stay on US 211 W to the Skyline Drive entrance at Panorama. We will meet at the Panorama parking lot (mile 31.6). Call Dietrich Roesler at 703-768-2456 if you plan to attend. You can arrange your own carpooling or ask his help in arranging one.

October 23 (Saturday) -- Norman Rockwell Exhibit at the American Art Museum -- 4:00 p.m.

Join other CGS members for a tour of the exhibit Norman Rockwell from the Collections of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, as well as other exhibits of interest.  Afterwards, we will have dinner at a nearby restaurant, e.g., Rosa Mexacano. October 24 (Sunday) – CGS Potluck Halloween Party at the Storm’s – 5:30 p.m.

Gisela and John Storm are hosting this fun party again at their home at 6145 Manchester Park Circle in Alexandria (Zip 22310) (Kingstowne).  Costumes are welcome but not necessary. At the first light (intersection with Manchester Boulevard) turn right and proceed about 200 feet, to the light at Manchester Lakes Drive.  Turn right and proceed to the second street on the right (Manchester Park Circle), turn in, stay right and count to the third town house unit on the left.  6145 is in the third unit. BIKE RIDES with POTOMAC PEDALERS.
The Potomac Pedalers Touring Club (PPTC) sponsors bike rides at a variety of ability levels during most of the year. Rides are ranked from "A" to "D," with "D" rides being the least demanding, and D-C being amenable to everyone. For the least demanding rides, the club does ORS bicycling; that means, occasional, recreational and social. Riders bike, talk, smile and eat together and welcome you to come along!
